Goulding’s Resort History
In the early 1920s…
Goulding’s Resort began in the early 1920s when Harry and his wife, Leone “Mike” Goulding, settled in Monument Valley to open a small trading post.
Living in tents, they traded food and supplies with the local Navajo community in exchange for handmade jewelry and rugs. Several years later, Harry and Mike built a permanent trading post, which still stands today as the Goulding’s Trading Post Museum.
During the Great Depression, the Gouldings traveled to Hollywood with only $60 in their pockets to introduce Monument Valley to the silver screen. Their perseverance brought the famous director John Ford to create Stagecoach, a classic western starring John Wayne.
Later films brought the untamed beauty of Monument Valley to the world. Working closely with the local Navajo community, they created a cultural hub where travelers, film crews, and artists could experience the unmatched landscape together.
Today…
Today, Goulding’s Resort continues that legacy under Navajo Nation ownership, welcoming guests with Diné hospitality and reverence for the land.
What started as a small trading post has grown into a full-service resort, offering comfortable lodging, tours, dining, and amenities while staying true to the history and spirit of Monument Valley.
